The Fugitive in Flight: Faith, Liberalism, and Law in a Classic TV Show (Personal Takes) Overview

“In the 1990s when I was watching reruns of The Fugitive on the Arts and Entertainment Network twice a day, I couldn’t take my eyes off it. . . . No one in The Fugitive ever relaxes as you watch and you can’t relax either, even though for long stretches absolutely nothing happens. It was the combination of nonstop tension with the (relative) absence of slam-bang action that attracted me, and as I now reflect on it, the same combination characterizes the literary works I have been reading and writing about for more than forty-five years.”—Stanley Fish, from the Introduction

In the stark television drama The Fugitive, Dr. Richard Kimble, an innocent man convicted of murder, is on the run from the police and in pursuit of the real killer. The award-winning show, which aired on ABC from 1963 to 1967 and inspired a 1993 blockbuster movie, still has many devoted fans, none more passionate than literary and legal theorist and intellectual provocateur Stanley Fish. In The Fugitive in Flight, Fish examines the moral structure of the long-running series and explains why he thinks this may well be the greatest show ever aired on American network television.

Analyzing key episodes, The Fugitive in Flight goes beyond plot summaries and behind-the-scenes stories. For Fish, the real action of The Fugitive takes place in confined spaces where the men and women Richard Kimble encounters are forced to choose what kind of person they will be for the rest of their lives. Kimble is the catalyst of such choices and changes, but he himself never changes. Breaking free from the political and social problems of his time, he is always the bearer and exemplar of the very middle-class values informing the system that has misjudged him. Kimble is the perfect representative of a mid-twentieth-century liberalism that values above all independence, personal integrity, and the refusal to surrender oneself to obsessions or causes. He is so consistently faithful to his liberal vision of life that he displays both its virtues and its dark side, the side that flees attachments, entanglements, responsibilities, and human connections. Stanley Fish’s Richard Kimble is the ultimate man in a gray flannel suit, even when he is wearing a windbreaker and walking down a dark, lonely road.

Another in a string of very well done fly tying books, which seem to have several things in common; Jay Nichols and Headwaters Books doing the publishing, and a lot of photography by Charlie Craven, who has raised the bar on step by step photography with his last 2 books. Good assortment of patterns, great pictures, and engaging text. This is not a complete manual on every style of dry fly, but it does not claim to be. The patterns it describes are widely useful and should provide the tools to take on most other types of dries.

A baby fish and a tadpole in a pond become friends. When the tadpole grows into a frog, he leaves the water to explore the land above. Upon hearing from his friend about this wondrous world, the fish decides to go see it. But he leaves the water at his peril, only to be rescued just in time by the frog.

This is not a moralistic story, but it lays some groundwork for an understanding of what constitutes truth. This especially relates to the postmodern idea that reality (especially spiritual reality) is whatever we perceive it to be. In this story the fish imagines birds, cows, humans, and other animals as fish-shaped beings. His perception does not alter the true form of birds, cows, humans and other animals — and chortling children will understand this as the fish’s funny conceptions are juxtaposed with reality.

The point is driven home not only with humor but also with dramatic tension. Although the fish perceives the world above as a place where he can thrive, he is proven wrong when he attempts to breathe air. After returning to his own environment, he admits that “fish is fish” and accepts his place in the pond. So the story dramatizes the truth that there are certain laws inherent in the created order, and that to ignore them is dangerous.

My 12 year old son who enjoys Scouts likes this book. He’s the type that makes his pinewood derby by whittling and sanding by hand–using none of those modern machinery tools.(and has actually done very well in the pinewood derby races!) He likes back-to-basics construction projects and this book offers lots of neat ideas and projects, some pretty simple, some more involved, & some of which he would not do, but he enjoys reading about it and looking at the diagrams. It’s just interesting and because the book was first published in 1882, some of the language is somewhat pioneeristic and so are the ideas and sketches, but that’s what makes it so neat! This book will inspire lots of ideas and encourage boys to get out and go play in the woods or make something at home. It’s also a good value for a hardback book.
